What we're about

We are pleased to announce the formation of a new meetup group, Anti-Racism International. We welcome everyone who would like to have a respectful and open conversation about issues related to racism in the Western world. We ask for honest soul searching and a willingness to learn and grow.

Becoming anti-racist in the 21st century can be complicated and confusing. This group is intended to provide a space for deep conversations about race, racism, White supremacy, White privilege, Black Lives Matter, police violence, religion, psychology, mental health, people of color, racial trauma, history, and human connection. All are welcome to join!

Online Anti-Racism Learning

The much anticipated How to Provide Antiracist Mental Health Care is now available! This critical and timely training is accredited by the Canadian Psychological Association (CPA) and the American Psychological Association (APA). The intent of the training is to increase mental health professionals' understanding of the needs of people from Black communities and learn to provide antiracist care. This training is evidence-based and allows mental health professionals to meet the real needs of people from Black communities. The training encompasses five modules:

  1. Awareness of racial issues
  2. Assessment adapted to racial issues
  3. A humanistic approach to medication management
  4. Interventions adapted to racial issues
  5. Providing tailored anti-racist mental health care to children and adolescents from Black communities

Dr. Jude Mary Cenat at uOttawa developed this project on the mental health of Black communities in Canada at the end of 2018. The training about racial issues for mental health professionals was intended to be made available in April 2021. However, as the research progressed, they realized the urgent need for this training to reach mental health professionals around the world right away.

Race, Ethnicity, & Culture in Clinical Training and Supervision

Minoritized groups have been underrepresented as both mental health professionals and as clients receiving care. The importance of culture is discussed in many psychological associations’ ethical codes, including the American Psychological Association’s (2017) Ethical Principles of Psychologists and Code of Conduct, the Canadian Psychological Association’s (2017) Canadian Code of Ethics for Psychologists, and the British Psychological Society’s (2018) Code of Ethics and Conduct. These codes underscore the requirement for psychologists to seek additional training, consultation, and supervision when practicing outside their scope of competence. The avoidance of harm is also a central principle and such harm may include disrespecting and violating a client's cultural and religious values. Clinicians must thus consider and integrate clients' values into the provision of treatment.
